Juran
Deming

Shewhard is PhD of physics.

He is the inventor of Shewhard's control charts that anounimously famed lately quality control chart. He defined normal random variation and the special cause variation and its diagnosis like rule of seven points at one side of the mean, rule of 9 points fluctuating, rule of one point outside 3 sgima etc.

Juran is an engineer from Serbia. He wrote the quality control handbook which have inspired quality practicioners till today. In this book, Juran served the methodological approach to quality that had been ever made.

His methodology essentially consists and directs to:

- define customers and their expecations and needs

- convert these needs into tangible metrics - we call  them now CTQ

- develop process and product quality that meets these expectations

- optimize the process

Taguchi worked for Japanese Navy.

He created Design of Experiments (DoE) tool. He focused on tangible costs of non-conformance quality - which I describe in Lean six sigma page on this website.

He differentiated and classified product optimization and product specification as two characteristics of a product can have.

Ishikawa is and academician with phD. in Tokyo University. He was famed  with fishbone, Ishikawa diagram, which is a tool to show the possible causes and effects of particular activities and issues. He defends that quality assurance must be dispersed to all organization and quality-focused vision must be assimilated company-wide.

He is not only the inventor of cause and effect diagram but data collection plan and prioritization matrix also.

His focus in his studies was reducing costs via reducing variation in product quality. He obsessively defends that personal relationship both within the organization or with external contacts such as sellers, contractors, customers has potential to influence quality of the outcome.

Shigeo Shingo

Shingo is a mechanical engineer worked for Toyota.

He developed poke-yoke, mistake proofing which kills the probability of mistake and created an automated quality control without need for a check.

He is the one who managed the team that created SMED and OTED techniques. Set-up times and product change time is minimized with SMED.

Taichi Ohno

He worked for Toyota like Shingo.

He appllied just-in-time and Kanban to the production processes.

He created fundamental tools of lean such as 7 wastes, 5 Why's, visual notification system.

Walter Shewhard

Deming is a PhD. in Maths. His documentary -called "if Japan can, Why can't we?" - not only invited U.S. industry to utilize process improvement initiatives like lean but also famed him as quality master.
